Stung by the splendor of a crazy thought

RIP Dennis Ritchie

Dennis Ritchie, the inventor of C programming language (my favourite language) and co-inventor of UNIX Operating system (my favourite OS) is no more. He also co-authored the famous K&R book, along with Ken Thomson. Sad day for all programmers who love C language and its pointers.

My friend Suraj came up with a poem on pointers. Go ahead and read it, if you want a good laugh-

Pointer bhi friend hota hai

Be a pointer my friend,
Who is free on one call,
Who casts into yourself,
Who takes any desired type.

Pointer is a variable like you,
Pointer points to a variable like you.
Pointer can be a friend in need,
Pointer is a friend in deed.

Like friendship needs care,
Pointer too needs care,
If Managed properly, biggest problem looks small.
If Unmanaged, smallest problem looks big.

A pointer can dance with you when in rhythm,
A pointer can make you dance out of rhythm.
Like friendship, it needs subtle care,
Else it will blow your mind with flare.

The pointer has a pet,
SIGSSEGV is its name.
It’s an untold gift,
An unwanted irritant.
Common among NOBODY friends, //NULL Pointers-or Hi, Bye friends
A nightmare to programmers it lends.

A Pointer becomes what we want,
Like a friend becomes what we make.

Jaise Pointer C ke liye zaroori hota hai,
Waise har ek friend zaroori hota hai :) :)

This poster inspired the poem :)

P.S: I really love pointers :)

  1. Wow C language , the bane of my life it used to be , But i had fun working in it and using it ..

May he rest in peace …

ANd I loved the pointers but they were always problamatic as memory leaks would happen if not used correctly :)

    *X :)

  2. I have a vague memory of pointers and stuff… So, not sure what either poem’s actually mean. I had more fun with GW BASIC. I learned to do a lot of stuff with it because I was supposed to participate in a competition based on it. I just love the flexibility offered by the line numbers 10, 20, 30, etc.. Yeah, I did get into infinite loop problems, but I could always restart the system when it hangs! When I started to develop interest in C language, board exams and college interfered. There was no more fun with programming after that. I am sure the person who invented C should have been brilliant! RIP Dennis Ritchie.

    • Oh even I started with BASIC programming. I vaguely remember BASIC.. the line numbers were definitely the best part of BASIC.. I also liked the simple graphics that could be done using it.. And I did PASCAL too for sometime..
But C is the language that I reallyyy liked.. you shud try C sometime..

  3. I’ve learnt C++ programming language. And loved it.
    RIP Dennis Ritchie….

  4. Thanks for posting this in your blog :) .. It was funny in deed :)

  5. RIP Dennis Ritchie. C is my favorite language too and K&R book is an all time classic. :)

  6. it has been ages since I used C. nice poem :)
